This isalnd is divided into two regencies: the greener West Sumba, and the drier East Sumba, each with its own socio-economy and culutural characteristic. The weather climate enables crop farming in West Sumba, whereas the steppe and savanna in East Sumba are utilised dor livestock.
Sumbanese traditional houses are built on the hills. The aquare rooftop is quite typical. There are traditional villages that can be visited for a better look.
